Historical markets

Sagavägen is an old trade route, stretching from the High Coast in Sweden to the Helgeland coast in Norway, along which there used to be a number of markets. Some of these historical markets have now started up again, giving visitors a unique opportunity to experience market life the way it used to be.

All the markets offer a traditional market atmosphere with genuine Norwegian, Swedish and Sami handicraft of good quality. However, they differ depending on the era, culture and setting that they represent, reflecting the varying natural geography of Sagavägen with its coasts, inland areas, mountains and lakes.

Walk around the stalls laden with locally produced food and traditional handicraft. Among the booths you will find homemade sweets, cheeses, felted wool products, knitwear, woodwork and leather-work. Taste newly baked tunnbröd (thin, flat, unleavened bread) and listen to the locals spinning old yarns.

As well as shopping at the market, you can experience the olden days' parish catechetical meetings, rides in horse-drawn carriages, crossbow shooting, tar-boiling and listen to folk-tales. Pat the animals in their pens as the folk-musicians scrape their fiddles and folk-dancers dance the polka. Feel the heat from the fire in the smithy or take part in a banquet in the long barn. Each market offers its own unique selection of merchandise and things to experience making each one a real adventure in itself.
