The Sagavägen Association

Sagavägen - border-crossing cooperation

In the early 1960s, plans for a fast road link between Norway and Sweden began to take shape. In June 1967, the ceremonious inauguration of this unique international trunk road, brought about by local initiative, took place. Over the years, Sagavägen has been rebuilt and improved bit by bit. This is clearly evident on the Norwegian side where the standard of the road is very high. On the Swedish side, there are 60 kilometers of gravelled road in the part closest to the border. This section is in the process of being asphalted and is estimated to be finished during the summer of 2007. Because of its geographical location, Sagavägen is open in winter too.

The Sagavägen Association

The Sagavägen Association, founded in 1967, has resulted in established forms of cooperation within the region. Over the years, the Sagavägen Association and its member municipalities on the Norwegian and Swedish sides have endeavoured to develop trade and industry, culture and tourism. The Association has also worked to bring about improvements to the entire highway and over the years has actively promoted exchanges between schools and sports associations.
